Friends of Somerset Regional Animal Shelter
The Cupid Fund

The Cupid Fund is a special fund dedicated to helping the shelter perform emergency medical treatment for its pets. The fund is named after a sweet little dog who came to the shelter on Valentine's Day. Cupid, as we called him, had been hit by a car. Cupid was a wonderful dog whom everyone fell in love with; however, the special surgery that Cupid required was more than the shelter could afford. Through the dedication of volunteers, staff, and a generous veterinarian, money for the surgery was raised. Unfortunately, because of the trauma of his injuries, Cupid did not survive the surgery. The Cupid fund was set up in memory of this special dog and the hope that the shelter can help other special pets who come to us in need of emergency care. Below are some of the more-recent recipients of the donations to the Cupid Fund: |

Clyde |
Clyde was hit
by a car on Route 22, while running at large. His owner no longer wanted
him and signed him over to SRAS. It was very touch and go for the
first 48 hours and our vets weren't sure he would live as he was in
shock and badly hurt. But he was stabilized and after that x-rayed,
where it was determined that he needed more extensive vet care than he
could get locally. Specialist veterinarians did his surgery, which
consisted of resetting bones, placing pins, etc. |

Isabelle |

When Isabelle was brought to our shelter she had an injury to her eye. She had been attacked by another cat and sustained a very bad puncture. At first we thought she
would have to have the eye removed. But thanks to the Cupid Fund,
Isabelle was able to receive the specialized treatment and medication to
save her eye. Not only was her eye saved but she has gotten back
nearly all of her sight! |

Barry |
Barry came into the shelter fine but after a while developed a head tilt. Regular exam could not determine the cause and he was referred to a specialist in Red Bank. After further exams it was thought that the only way to diagnose this was through an MRI, a very expensive proposition. His MRI was paid for by the Cupid Fund. There really were no conclusive results from the MRI, but it ruled out a lot of very serious things like brain tumor or major ear tumors. He was fostered locally for a while by a wonderful woman and then adopted by a friend of a volunteer and now has a very loving home in Maryland. |

Barry's New Life! |
Barry's new family says he loves carrying around his little toys and really enjoys sitting in one of the four large picture windows they have and chirping at all the birds and squirrels he sees. His head still tilts but not so much and not all the time. He and his family really enjoy each other and are thankful to the Cupid Fund and everybody at SRAS for everything they did for him. |

Dolfie |
| Dolfie was an elderly dachsund that had the worst teeth that the vet had ever seen. He came in with his mouth and teeth in horrible condition when he was surrendered to the shelter because his family was relocating. The Cupid Fund paid to have his dental work done, including extractions. He is now much happier and out of pain and has been adopted into a very loving home. |
